The Man in the Moon took on a new meaning on 20 July 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down in the lunar landing vehicle Eagle. Two new sayings entered our vocabulary. "The Eagle has landed" and "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" are synonymous with the adventurous spirit of the human race. One Small Step is just one of the books at Rodney Libraries about the moon landing. It is a children's non-fiction title. One Giant Leap (appropriately enough) is the adult version of the story.
You can find a range of books and DVD's at your local library by completing a subject search Space Flight to the Moon
The moon isn't just about space flight and exploration though. It affects the tides and the weather back here on earth. In The lunar code Ken Ring explains his lunar cycle-based science of weather prediction. It also features in folklore, mythology, astrology and medicine. The Book of the Moon covers all aspects. Of course, it also inspires as can be seen by our authors, poets, musicians and artists (The Moon - Robert Louis Stevenson, New Moon - Stephenie Meyer,
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd).
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd). The last word today belongs to the kids picturebooks. One Giant Leap was released last year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the landing. And the next great space frontier is celebrated You are the First Kid on Mars
