Well respected and much loved Sir Edmund Hillary died in Auckland this morning. The Hibiscus Coast has a special affection for 'Sir Ed'. This statue was unveiled in 1991 and is sited in Hillary Square in Orewa.
The library has a number of resources on this extraordinary man.

Larger than life are the words that spring to mind. Bigger and bolder than the rest of us, but still just one of the blokes. You climbed higher than the rest of us in so many different ways and it seemed liked you would be around forever but of course that is not possible.
A true inspiration to us all and a life that truly needs celebrating. RIP.
